Westfield State sophomore defensive back Ryan O'Connell (Athol, Mass.) was named co-defensive player of the week in the 16-team New England Football Conference.

O'Connell accounted for three turnovers with two interceptions (22 return yards) and a fumble recovery. O'Connell also forced a fumble and made eight tackles, including six solo stops, in Westfield's 33-16 victory at Worcester State.

O'Connell also played a key role in Westfield's Oct. 31 victory over Fitchburg when he blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown.

WORCESTER - Westfield State sophomore Kyle Anderson (Westminster, MA) passed for 172 yards and three scores to help lead the Owls defeat Worcester State 33-16 this afternoon on the last weekend of New England Football Conference Bogan Division play.

Winners of five straight, Westfield State improves to 7-3 overall and 5-2 in conference play while the Lancers slip to 1-9 and 1-6 in the NEFC Bogan Division. In MASCAC play, Westfield finished with a 5-0 record to capture the MASCAC championship.

NEFC weekly honor roll

Westfield State punter Chris Stengel was selected co-defensive player of the week in the 16-team New England Football Conference.

The junior from Forest Hill, Maryland, had a sensational day in Westfield's 32-16 victory over Fitchburg, punting 10 times for a 45.5 yard average. Six of his punts were inside the 20, four traveled 50 or more yards, one was a touchback (which was nearly downed inside the 1) and two were fair catches.

In addition, Stengel kicked off five times, averaging 56.8 yards, with two of his kickoffs (72 and 73 yards in the air) going into the end zone. Finally, he made 3-of-4 PATs and a field goal.

The Westfield State football team faces another challenging game this
week when it travels to Framingham State. The Owls are 4-2 overall
(three wins by a total of 12 points) and 2-1 in the NEFC Bogan Division.
The Owls are 3-3 and 1-2. The Owl defense is ranked first in the NEFC
and seventh nationally in scoring defense, allowing 62 points in six games.
Westfield is also ranked in first in the NEFC in pass effficiency defense
(seventh naitonally) and turnover margin (5th nationally). Framingham
has several big-play performers in David Leach, who ranks fourth
nationally in rushing (145.0), and Joe McCarthy in receptions per 
game (8.8).

Weekly Honor Roll

Westfield State senior defensive tackle Matt Fall (Wilbraham) has been named the defensive player of the week in the 16-team New England Football Conference (NEFC).

The 6-4, 305-pounder led the Owls' strong defensive effort in their 13-7 victory over Mass. Maritime Academy. Fall racked up a career-high 14 tackles; he had seven solo tackles and three for losses, including two sacks.

The Owls, who have only allowed 62 points in six games, face another tough test this Saturday, Oct. 17, when they play at Framingham State at 2:00 p.m.
