The Westfield State athletics department presented special outstanding contributor awards to two standout student-athletes at the college's varsity sports spring banquet.
The two seniors who contributed greatly to their teams’ success were Andrea Wasuk (basketball) and Chelsea Sylvia (softball).
Wasuk was the 2009 MASCAC Player of the year as she led her team to the conference regular season and tournament championships, along with a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Her team also posted a 22-5 record in 2009, for her sport’s best winning percentage in school history.
Wasuk was an All American honorable mention selection and first- team All New England selection. In addition, she was a three-time all-conference selection and received her team’s most valuable player award the past three years.
Wasuk finished her collegiate basketball career with 1,373 points, which ranks her third on the college’s all-time scoring list.
Sylvia helped her team reach new heights during the past three years when it posted three straight 20-win seasons and won its first MASCAC regular season championship in 24 years.
Her team won 66 games during the past three seasons and she was the winning pitcher in 41 games. She set school career records for career victories, lowest earned run average and, most impressively, for strikeouts. In 371 innings pitched, she struck out 475 batters.
